Crazy Carribean Weather
Oh man, the weather has been crazy these past few days. On Thursday, with my backside glued to a bicycle seat all day, the weather was clear, sunny and bordering on too hot. On Friday, when I had time to enjoy the weather, it rained all day. Literally. Nary a drop ceased to fall for 14 hours.
On Saturday, Drew and I took a long planned trip to Punta Gorda, usually referred to PG, to do a little Christmas shopping at the First Annual Taste of Belize Craft Fair. We boarded the bus at 8am and traveled through cloudy skies and drizzly weather before disembarking at 11am. We ate some fantastic Chinese food, then set off to find the fabled craft fair. Unfortunately, the skies opened up. We were soaked by the time we found the fair. Because of the weather, the what booths that showed up were all crammed in the parish hall, creating a very muggy and awkward environment. Drew and I didn't purchase anything, but we hope the Second Annual Taste of Belize Craft Fair will have better weather and a better turnout. We made our way back to the bus stop, and boarded the three plus hour bus back to Dangriga at 12:20pm. It was a fun and wet hour and twenty minutes.
When we made it back, we discovered the weather in Dangriga had been beautiful all day! Oh, the luck! We also discovered that Ann McCoon, the principal at St. Matthew's Anglican School where I teach had been diligently trying to reach us all day. She finally caught up with us while we were munching on our leftover fried rice, insisting she wanted to "hang out" with us. She was to pick us up at 8pm. We were confused, and in the middle of watching the SEC Championships (boo Florida), but we went.
SURPRISE! Ms. McCoon and the other teachers from St. Matthew's had thrown me and Drew a surprise going away party! So much a surprise, we almost missed it! It was so touching for them to think of us and want to show us their appreciation. Great food, loud music and teachers dancing and gabbing - what could be a better Saturday night?
So, going along with the crazy weather theme, Sunday was just clear enough to get us to walk to the beach before wind picked up and the sun disappeared. Then today, after a morning of running errands, the sky completely cleared and the sun shone so bright! Drew and I rushed home to change into bathing suits, slathered on sunscreen, called a cab to get us to the beach faster, then waited outside...as the dense storm clouds rolled in at alarming rates. Before the 10 minutes between our phone call an the cab arriving, the sky was completely black. We opted not to go to the beach. Good thing, because 30 minutes later it started to rain, and hasn't let up since.
I scorn it now, but I am sure that I will pine for it once I get back in the cold cold winter weather of NW Arkansas.
